CTV News – Gay Couple Married in Canada Sues U.S. Government for Denying Citizenship to Child
To remedy what their parents, a gay married couple, view as an injustice, Ethan Dvash-Banks became a plaintiff at the tender age of 16 months in a federal lawsuit against the U.S. State Department that seeks the same rights his brother has as an American citizen. Each boy was conceived with donor eggs and the sperm from a different father – one an American, the other an Israeli citizen – but born by the same surrogate mother minutes apart. The lawsuit was filed Monday by an LGBTQ immigrant rights group.
CBC News – No Sign of Bias Against Government Job-Seekers with Ethnic-Sounding Names, Pilot Project Finds
Hiding ethnic-sounding names from resumes has no real bearing on who’s picked from the pile of applications for jobs in the federal public service, according to a pilot project on blind hiring. A report released Tuesday by the Public Service Commission shows visible minorities were short-listed at roughly the same rate through a name-blind recruitment process (46 per cent) as through a traditional process (47 per cent).

Une professeure de l’Université de Winnipeg, Jan Stewart, a créé un guide afin d’aider les élèves réfugiés à s’épanouir dans leur classe. Le guide Relier deux mondes : soutenir les jeunes nouveaux arrivants et réfugiés explore des sujets jugés importants par des enseignants, des élèves et des parents. L’équipe de Jan Stewart a mené des entrevues durant trois ans afin de définir les défis que ces élèves venus d’ailleurs doivent surmonter.
Canadian Immigrant – Ontario to Welcome More Newcomers with Increase in Provincial Nominee Program
The allocation of immigrants accepted through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is being increased from 6,000 to 6,600. OINP is a part of Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), which allows the provinces and territories to nominate immigrants based on their abilities and the in-demand positions of the respective location. Currently, eight streams of OINP are accepting applications.

After years of development and discussion, a University of Winnipeg professor has created a new guide that aims to help refugee students thrive in the classroom. Bridging Two Worlds: Supporting Newcomer and Refugee Youth, explores topics identified during interviews with teachers, students and parents over a span of three years. The guide is meant to help teachers better understand those experiences, said Jan Stewart, education professor at the U of W and co-author of the guide.

Moins de la moitié des personnes expulsées du Canada en 2017 ont payé pour rentrer à la maison, selon des informations de l’Agence des services frontaliers obtenues par CBC. Les autres expulsions se sont donc faites aux frais du gouvernement. L’an dernier, plus de 8200 personnes ont dû être expulsées du pays. Ce sont des migrants à qui l’asile a été refusé, mais aussi des travailleurs ou des étudiants étrangers […].
