Toronto Star – Canada’s Refugee Board Abruptly Changes Its Scheduling System Amid Surging Backlog

Thousands of refugee hearings that had been scheduled for this year have been abruptly cancelled so officials can roll out a “first-in, first-out” scheduling system amid a growing backlog. In a form letter, the Immigration and Refugee Board told recent asylum-seekers that they should expect their cases to be heard in between 12 and 24 months as the board prioritizes hearings based on the date they are referred by immigration and border enforcement officers, affecting both those who cross the land border and those who arrive by air.

Journal de Métro – Aider les demandeurs d’asile à s’intégrer par le travail

La concertation des organismes communautaires de Montréal-Nord à la suite de la vague de demandeurs d’asile cet été a porté ses fruits. L’organisme Impulsion-Travail pourra aider 50 de ces personnes à trouver du travail grâce à un financement de 83 090 $ du Bureau d’intégration des nouveaux arrivants de Montréal (BINAM). «Comme ces gens n’ont pas de statut régularisé, ils ne sont pas admissibles aux services d’Emploi-Québec» […].

Radio-Canada – Le Guide de la citoyenneté inclura de l’information contre la violence sexiste

La mise à jour du Guide de la citoyenneté du Canada inclura une mise en garde aux nouveaux arrivants concernant la pratique illégale des mutilations génitales féminines (MGF). Le ministre de l’Immigration, Ahmed Hussen, a qualifié cette pratique d’« odieuse » et illégale au Canada. « Bien que le contenu du nouveau guide soit encore en cours d’élaboration, les Canadiens peuvent être assurés que le nouveau document inclura de l’information sur les lois canadiennes […].

CBC News – New Citizenship Guide to Warn Against ‘Abhorrent’ Practice of Female Genital Mutilation

Canada’s updated citizenship guide will include a warning to newcomers about the illegal practice of female genital mutilation. In a statement provided to CBC News, Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen called it an “abhorrent practice” that is against the law in Canada. The issue has become politically charged, with the Conservatives suggesting the revamped guide would drop a reference to the practice.

CBC News – IRB Warns Asylum Seekers About iTunes, Bitcoin Scam

Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) is warning asylum seekers not to fall for an extortion scam that demands payment in iTunes cards or bitcoin. The IRB has printed posters in six languages warning refugees about the scammers, who threaten their targets with deportation if they don’t pay up. The IRB’s Line Guibert-Wolff said the IRB became aware in December of 140 asylum seekers who had been targeted by the scammers since last August, though it’s believed none actually made the payments.

Globe and Mail – Trudeau Announces Canada Doubling Money for Girls’ Education Fund at Davos

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used the stage at the World Economic Forum to announce that Canada is doubling the money it gives to an international fund that helps educate girls in developing countries.

During a panel discussion on women’s empowerment on Thursday, alongside Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, the Prime Minister said Canada will provide an additional $180-million to the Global Partnership Education Fund (GPE) in 2018-2021.
