Chronicle Herald – Initiative Aims to Help At-Risk Scholars Find Safe Haven

Karly Kehoe is hoping to help academics and researchers who have been displaced by war or other safety issues in their home countries find a safe haven to continue their research. Kehoe is the Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Canada Communities at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. On Tuesday, the university will host a panel discussion and screening of a 30-minute documentary film on the topic of Science in Exile, Scholars at Risk and the Future of Research.

Le Devoir – Danemark : les sociaux-démocrates s’attaquent à l’immigration « non occidentale »

Première formation politique du Danemark, le Parti social-démocrate, membre de l’opposition au gouvernement de centre droit, a présenté lundi un projet de réforme censé tarir l’arrivée d’étrangers « non occidentaux » à travers une batterie de mesures rejetées par les autres partis de gauche. « Nous voulons plafonner le nombre d’étrangers non occidentaux accueillis au Danemark », a expliqué dans un épais dossier publié sur le Web la chef de Socialdemokratiet, Mette Frederiksen.

CBC News – ‘It’s Therapy’: Lethbridge Woman Uses Art to Help Refugees Tell Their Stories

A project in Lethbridge is helping refugees use the universal language of art to tell their stories of fleeing war-torn countries for Canada. When refugees from Syria, Lebanon and other Middle Eastern countries began resettling in Lethbridge two years ago, artist Amrita Deshpande knew she wanted to help. Deshpande, who is the artist in residence at the Community Art Centre, reached out to five refugee families, and offered to teach them what she knows best: art.

Reuters – Canada Talks to U.S. About Illegal Migration, Unsure About Surge

A senior Canadian official held talks in Washington on Monday about immigrants illegally entering from the United States and indicated Ottawa was not sure it would see a surge in border crossings this year. Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale met with U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Monday and said afterward that the two countries still did not fully understand what exactly was driving the phenomenon.

Toronto Star – Canada’s Immigration Program for Migrant Caregivers Under Review

Foreign caregivers will not be eligible for permanent residence if they have not accrued two years of employment by Nov. 29, 2019, according to a notice posted by the Immigration Department. The federal government is currently reviewing Canada’s two programs for foreign caregivers — one for those caring for children and the other for those caring for adults with high medical needs — and has yet to decide whether to do away with them completely, renew them or come up with replacements.
