Global News – Irregular Border Crossings Down Slightly in January, Still Exceed 1,500
The number of people intercepted by the RCMP last month as they attempted to cross the Canada-U.S. border irregularly was down slightly from the month before. According to figures released this week by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, 1,517 people were stopped by the police as they crossed between legal checkpoints during what is typically Canada’s coldest month — January. Of those, 1,458 came through in Quebec. The rest were split between Manitoba (18) and British Columbia (41).
Global News – Mexico Again Among Canada’s Top Sources of Refugee Claims After Visa Requirement Lifted
Refugee claims by Mexicans have increased sharply since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau allowed citizens of the country to enter Canada without travel visas, new figures show. Almost 1,500 citizens of Mexico had refugee claims referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board in 2017 — six times more than in the previous year, when they totaled just 250. A declassified Intelligence Brief obtained by Global News linked the growing number of claims directly to the federal government’s decision to lift the visa requirement on Dec. 1, 2016.

Hundreds of thousands of international students are here from around the world and largely fending for themselves in a new country without adequate support from school boards, provincial governments and the federal government, industry experts say. And now settlement agencies, student recruiters and host family companies are urging these bodies to regulate the industry. Moy Wong-Tam, executive director of the Centre for Immigrant and Community Services (CICS) in Toronto said the unregulated industry leaves students vulnerable to scamsand poor treatment.
CBC News – Nova Scotia Announces New Immigration Stream for Doctors
Nova Scotia is starting a new immigration stream for doctors looking to come to the province. But it only applies to doctors who can already work here, not other foreign-trained physicians. Nova Scotia currently accepts physicians from 29 jurisdictions, including the U.K. and the U.S. Immigration Minister Lena Diab announced the new stream at a news conference Thursday afternoon, saying it will be a strong advantage as the province tries to recruit more doctors.
Business Vancouver – Chinese Students Seek Entrepreneurship Path to Immigration
With approximately 186,000 Chinese students now studying in Canada, it should not come as a surprise that many want to extend their stay beyond graduation. The main challenge, often, is finding a job, and students are now increasingly turning to a new avenue – entrepreneurship – to secure a future in Canada. The level of interest was reflected at a January event at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The seminar, aimed at connecting Chinese-speaking students with Vancouver entrepreneurs, drew almost 500 people, forcing organizers to switch venues and close registration early.
