U of T News – Henry Ssali Wants to Raise Awareness About the Plight of Refugees
Growing up in Uganda, Henry Ssaliexperienced what it was like living alongside refugees. Hoping to raise awareness about the plight of refugees around the world, Ssali is helping to organize a week-long initiative with the U of T African Alumni Association. Part of Black History Month, the initiative at the downtown Toronto campus includes tents, pamphlets and recommended books set up at Robarts Library, John W. Graham Library and OISE with volunteers who can talk about their own experiences as refugees or having friends who were refugees.

Metro News – Immigration Detainee Ebrahim Toure Marks 5 Years Without Freedom
At Ebrahim Toure’s first detention review hearing, three days after he was arrested by Canada’s border police, immigration authorities said his detention was not likely to be “unduly lengthy.” That was five years ago. The federal government, meanwhile, appears to be no closer to deporting the 46-year-old failed refugee claimant to Gambia, where he is believed to have been born. He has no identity documents and Gambian officials have given no indication they will issue him any.
Toronto Star – Israel Agrees to Halt Deportations of Canada-Bound Asylum-Seekers
Israel is set to begin deporting some 37,000 asylum-seekers, the majority of them Sudanese and Eritreans, in April. The Canadian government is under the gun to resettle 1,845 of the African refugees whose sponsorship applications are currently in process, some for years. A spokesperson for Immigration Canada confirmed it has reached an agreement with Israeli authorities to allow the Canada-bound asylum-seekers to remain in the country and not be jailed until their sponsorships are finalized.
