CIC News – New Action Plan Aims to Increase Francophone Immigration Outside of Quebec

A new joint action plan uniting Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial governments is aiming to raise the number of French-speaking immigrants who are settling outside of Quebec. The plan’s unveiling on Friday, March 2, followed a meeting of federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for immigration and Canada’s francophone communities. The plan establishes a target that would see French-speaking immigrants constitute 4.4 per cent of all immigrants settling outside of Quebec by 2023.

Global News – Surrey RCMP Charge Man for Alleged Assault of Syrian Refugee

Surrey RCMP say a 52-year-old man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a recent Syrian refugee.

Police say Mark Nijjer was walking near the Newton bus loop when he allegedly elbowed the 18-year-old victim in November 2017. Cpl. Scotty Schumann said the family was surprised with the charge. “When you’re fleeing from a country that’s war-torn like Syria is, and coming to a country like Canada with an excellent reputation… It caught this family off-guard,” he said.

National Post – Partial Amputation of Fingers Price of Man’s Walk to Freedom in Manitoba

Kangni Kouevi walked for more than three hours in the bitter cold on Jan. 5 to cross near the Manitoba border town of Emerson. The RCMP picked him up and took him to the Canada Border Services Agency at Emerson after he called 911 on his cellphone. The Hospitality House Refugee Ministry says Kouevi’s right hand healed but parts of three fingers on his left hand had to be amputated. The former Togo resident is awaiting an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing this June in Winnipeg.

New York Times – How Immigrants Become Truly Canadian: On the Ski Slopes

Eager to embrace the Canadian way of life, or simply to assuage the cabin fever that accompanies the long frigid months, many immigrants are jamming on their ski boots and hazarding a go at their adopted nation’s quintessential winter pastime. “In winter there’s nothing else to do,” said Mahendran Arumugam, who moved to Canada in 2014 from the sweltering Indian state of Tamil Nadu. “There’s no point complaining about snow, so you better start enjoying it, and what better way than to start skiing.”
