Global News – Many Temporary Foreign Workers Still Paying Thousands of Dollars to Work in B.C.: Report
On Wednesday, a new report from the Migrant Workers Centre detailed there are overseas employment agencies with branches in B.C. that charge temporary foreign workers thousands of dollars to work in the province. The report found that many foreign workers are concerned they will lose their job or be deported back to their home country. It also said migrant workers are tied to a specific employer because of the work-permit system, and have little to no “formal access to low-cost or free legal services” because of their immigration status.

A powerful refugee judge accused of a “pattern of incompetence” and aggressive behaviour aimed at lawyers and refugee claimants is no longer employed by Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), according to the organization. “Ms. [Natalka] Cassano is no longer an employee of the IRB,” said a statement from IRB spokesperson Anna Pape. “As this is a private matter, we will not comment further.”

CBC News – Budget Funding for Black Communities Shows Government Is ‘Listening’, Says Liberal MP
The government is setting aside $19 million over five years to research culturally-appropriate mental health programs and support for black youth at risk. Mental health experts said the funding will help improve access to treatment for a vulnerable sector of the population. “This is actually the first time that the black community was mentioned in a federal budget,” said Liberal MP Celina Caesar-Chavannes.
