Abdoul Abdi’s deportation hearing at the Immigration and Refugee Board in Toronto has been postponed until after his Federal Court case in Halifax on May 29, his lawyer said Wednesday. “He was incredibly relieved with the result and to learn that he’s not going to lose his permanent resident status before he gets to have his day in court,” said Ben Perryman, Abdi’s Halifax-based lawyer, who will represent him at Federal Court.

Abdoul Abdi, 24, faces deportation after serving a prison sentence for violent crimes. In foster care since age 7, the former Somali refugee had not obtained Canadian citizenship because child services did not file an application on his behalf. The Immigration and Refugee Board decided to postpone a deportation hearing until a federal court weighs in, according to Abdi’s lawyer, and decide whether it is reasonable or lawful to deport someone who is deportable because of government inaction – a decision that could alter the fate of hundreds of children.
CTV News – New Report Calls for Ways to Retain More Immigrants in Atlantic Canada
A new report says if Atlantic Canada wants to solve its economic and demographic problems, it must become more than a stopover for immigrants. The report entitled “The People Imperative” will be released Wednesday at a one-day summit on immigration and revitalization, being held in Fredericton. It says increasing immigration won’t work for Atlantic Canada unless people choose to stay. Right now the region has the lowest immigration retention rates in the country.

Beatriz Adriana Mora Manriquez is happy Ottawa is reviewing its policy that bans people with disabilities and excessive health needs from immigrating to Canada. The Mexican migrant says time is running out for her husband, Sergio Soberano Osorio, however. Soberano is suffering from renal failure and needs to get on the kidney transplant wait list as soon as possible. The Toronto couple has applied for permanent resident status on humanitarian and compassionate grounds and has been waiting almost four years for a decision.

UPEI’s director of recruitment says a local international student nearly lost $5,000 to a scam call that claimed to be from RCMP and threatened him with deportation. “Fortunately I got a call from the student who was really afraid, and had already taken the money out of his account,” said Jerry Wang. Wang feels the student was victimized because he doesn’t speak English well.
