A report coming to politicians next week highlights the divisive community feedback to the so-called sanctuary city label council debated last year. But there’s no recommendation from staff as to whether London should adopt it.

Globe and Mail – Canadian Attitudes Toward Immigrants, Refugees Remain Positive: Study

Six-in-10 Canadians chose “disagree” when asked the question “Are immigration levels too high?” in the February survey by the Environics Institute for Survey Research – a finding that has remained relatively stable for a decade. Eight-in-10 said immigrants have a positive economic impact. Compared with last year’s survey, more respondents believed that immigrants adopt Canadian values. Most of the national results extended a steady 30-year trend toward greater acceptance of immigrants.

CIC News – IRCC to Receive $747 Million to Support 2018-2020 Immigration Levels Plan

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says it is slated to receive $747 million to support Canada’s 2018-2020 Immigration Levels Plan under the 2018 federal budget. In an email, IRCC spokesperson Lindsay Kemp said the additional funds “will ensure that we continue to manage the immigration system carefully and responsibly,” adding that the largest proportion will be used for settlement services.

CBC News – More People Leaving Sask. Than Coming in From Other Provinces, but Population Still Grows: Stats Can

More people are moving from Saskatchewan to other provinces than there are people from other provinces moving here, according to the latest data released by Statistics Canada — but the province’s population still grew last year. Claudine Provencher, an analyst with the demography division of Statistics Canada, said the growth was driven by international migration, meaning the province saw more immigrants, students, temporary workers and asylum seekers.

La Presse – Un enfant réfugié devenu grand menacé de déportation

Une audience sur la déportation d’un réfugié somalien, arrivé au Canada alors qu’il était enfant, a été reportée jusqu’à ce que la Cour fédérale entende sa cause ce printemps. Dans une décision rendue mercredi à Toronto, la Commission de l’immigration et du statut de réfugié du Canada a reporté l’audience d’Abdoul Abdi jusqu’à ce que son appel soit entendu en cour, le 29 mai.

Québec presse Ottawa de lui rembourser tous les frais encourus pour l’accueil des demandeurs d’asile depuis le début de l’année 2017, dans une lettre envoyée mercredi au gouvernement fédéral. Les ministres de l’Immigration, David Heurtel, et des Relations canadiennes, Jean-Marc Fournier, demandent au gouvernement fédéral de « reconnaître le fardeau financier assumé par le Québec ».
