National Post – Trudeau Tweet Caused Influx of Refugee Inquiries, Confusion Within Government, Emails Reveal

When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used Twitter to welcome refugees to Canada last winter, it prompted a spike in inquiries from would-be refugees and resulted in confusion within the federal government, newly released emails reveal. International commentators wondered whether Canada was announcing it would take in all those banned from entering the U.S. Some Canadian officials wondered about that too, according to records the National Post obtained through an access-to-information request.

Chronicle Herald – Immigrant Hiring Focus of Federal Funding

Connecting entrepreneurs who have the expertise to turn their ideas into successful and growth-oriented companies with skilled immigrants is said to be one way Canada’s openness can help build a world-class innovation economy. The federal government, through ACOA, is providing $77,562 to the Western Regional Enterprise Network so it can work with entrepreneurs and the local business communities in the western region to build awareness of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot and help those facing labour shortages access the pilot.

According to the union, the new deal includes retroactive salary increases “that greatly exceed those provided to all other federal law enforcement agencies for 2014-2018.”

Toronto Star – Report Urges Canada Take Lead to Aid Rohingya Refugees

In a report released Tuesday, the Liberal government’s special envoy to the region, Bob Rae, calls on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to more than triple the amount of money spent on aid to the region, to $150 million a year over the next four years; to accept thousands of largely Muslim minority refugees who have fled Myanmar without specifying a particular number; and to maintain targeted economic sanctions against individuals responsible “for the abuses of human rights and the crimes against humanity in Myanmar.”
