CBC News – Police Warn International Students About Phone Scam

Ottawa police are warning the public, particularly international students, about the resurgence of a phone scam threatening victims with deportation unless they pay up. According to police, the fraudsters, who are believed to be calling from outside Canada, pose as officials from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and tell their targets they’ve been charged with a crime in their home country, usually money laundering. They threaten to deport the victim unless they send pre-paid gift cards to a lawyer.

Montreal Gazette – Supporters Say Guatemalan Woman Abused and Deceived by CBSA

Lucy Fancineth Granados’ supporters are filing a complaint with the Quebec Human Rights Commission to denounce the abusive treatment they say she is suffering at the hands of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The undocumented Guatemalan was arrested on March 20 by CBSA agents and was scheduled to be deported the following week. The deportation was postponed because the 42-year-old single mother was hospitalized for a health emergency.

CBC News – Charlottetown Welcoming to New Immigrants, Study Finds

The Perceptions of Change Project reached 460 Charlottetown residents by telephone, and asked them a variety of questions about changes in the city. Virtually all respondents, 99 per cent, had noticed an increase in immigrants living in the city in the last five to 10 years. A majority, 57 per cent, said the changes were for the better, with another 40 per cent not seeing the immigrants making a significant difference. Just three per cent judged things changing for the worse.

CBC News – Montreal Prepares for Possible Summer Influx of Asylum Seekers

Montreal is taking stock of its housing options as it prepares for another possible increase in asylum seekers this summer. “We want to take action to ensure there is lodging,” Magda Popeanu, vice-chair of the city’s executive committee, said Wednesday. The city opened the cavernous Olympic Stadium to asylum seekers for about a month last August. However, Popeanu stressed that the Plante administration is reluctant to use the Big O this year.
