Immigrant women in Canada face greater employment barriers and earn less money than both male immigrants and Canadian-born women, data compiled by the immigration department suggests.
The information shows a persistent gap between female immigrants, both new and established in Canada, compared with their Canadian-born counterparts. The data also shows that more women arrive in Canada as the spouses of economic immigrants or as non-economic newcomers or refugees and have lower employment rates and earn less than the average wage.
Toronto Star – Calgary School of Public Policy Proposes Refugee System Fixes
On Thursday, the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy published a policy study by Robert Vineberg outlining the history of Canada’s refugee program. Vineberg’s paper looks at resettlement from the Second World War onward and suggests solutions to help move the process forward and overcome a backlog of more than 30,000 refugee claims. “They’re under-resourced,” Vineberg said. “I think having the initial decision made by the immigration department, which has a lot more staff and is in a lot more locations across the country, this could be done faster.”
Chronicle Herald – Justice Overturns Citizenship Ruling for Nova Scotia Man
In his April 4 decision, Federal Court Justice Robert Barnes ruled that the citizenship judge ignored relevant evidence and instead was preoccupied with prior fraudulent conduct by the applicant. According to the decision, Mohd Rabi Morelly, who previously lived in Kuwait, had his citizenship denied by Citizenship Judge Veronica Johnson in 2017 on the basis that he failed to establish a physical presence in Canada for three years as required by the Citizenship Act.

Newcomers living in southwestern Ontario are being warned about a scam in which the caller demands everything from digital currency to prepaid gift cards, all while threatening an arrest or deportation. Adding to the trickery, software is being used to alter call display numbers to match that of Immigration Canada or other services providers. Immigration Canada will never request the following: Bitcoin, iTunes cards, Steam (gaming) cards, prepaid credit card & gift cards, or any kind of money transfer including Western Union and Money gram.

The divisive debate in Quebec about the clothes Muslim women choose to wear is back in the spotlight, less than six months before the fall provincial election. Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante suggested last week she is open to city police officers wearing a Sikh turban or an Islamic headscarf, known as the hijab, as part of the official uniform. Around the same time, Eve Torres, a 44-year-old Muslim mother of three who proudly wears a hijab, announced she was seeking the nomination in a Montreal-area riding for Quebec solidaire, the legislature’s most left-leaning party.
