CBC News — Workplace sexual violence against temporary foreign workers in P.E.I. underreported, advocates say

Better protections are needed for temporary foreign workers facing sexual violence in the workplace, advocates say. Instances of sexual violence against workers often go unreported, said Sarah Dennis, program manager with the RISE Program, which provides free legal support for people who have experienced workplace sexual harassment. “There are many barriers in place for temporary foreign workers to come forward to disclose sexual violence,” Dennis said.

FOX 5 — Migrant crossings at US-Canada border drop amid immigration policy change

A new report highlights a significant drop in migrant crossings along the U.S.-Canada border, with recent data showing a 60% decline in apprehensions from October to December of last year. Some officials say the change is the result of policy shifts under the Trump administration, though some experts suggest the trend began under the previous administration. Federal data shows that border patrol apprehensions along the northern border spiked in previous years, but dropped sharply in late 2024. Between October and December, apprehensions fell by 60%, a stark contrast to the surge recorded over the summer.

City News — Aid groups sue over Trump’s order suspending federal refugee program and funding

Major refugee aid groups sued the Trump administration on Monday over the president’s executive order suspending the federal refugee resettlement program and funding for resettlement agencies. The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Seattle asks the court to declare Trump’s executive order illegal, stop the order’s implementation and restore refugee-related funding. President Donald Trump’s recent order said the refugee program — a form of legal migration to the U.S. — would be suspended because cities and communities had been taxed by “record levels of migration” and didn’t have the ability to “absorb large numbers of migrants, and in particular, refugees.”

CBC News — New Canadians making up larger share of Ottawa’s homeless population: report

Newcomers to Canada are making up a bigger part of Ottawa’s homeless population, while a smaller portion of homeless Ottawans are using the city’s shelter system, according to a new detailed look at the situation in the nation’s capital. On Friday, the city released the results of its most recent survey of people experiencing homelessness. The survey was part of a point-in-time count conducted over 24 hours last October, which found there were 2,952 homeless people in Ottawa — an increase of more than 300 people since the last count in 2021.
