A federal decision to relieve pressure on Quebec by sending asylum seekers to other parts of Canada is raising concern at likely destinations that they too will need help dealing with the influx. The federal government has agreed with Quebec to quickly move border-crossers who intend to settle in other parts of Canada to those locations while their immigration cases are resolved instead of expecting them to wait nearly two years for hearings in Montreal.

The Provincial Nominee Program that allows provinces to hand-pick immigrants to meet local labour market needs has successfully attracted newcomers to places other than Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec, but retaining them is still a challenge. The program accounted for 96 per cent of the total economic immigration in Prince Edward Island; 93 per cent in Manitoba; 89 per cent in Saskatchewan; 89 per cent in Yukon; 86 per cent in New Brunswick; 72 per cent in Newfoundland and Labrador; and 59 per cent in Nova Scotia.

CBC News – Black Parents Ask Ottawa Public Schools to Collect Race Data
A group of parents from Ottawa’s black community are calling on the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board to collect race-based data so they can fight discrimination in the education system. Richard Sharpe said his 16-year-old son has faced undue discrimination at school. He said it makes a climate where children like his don’t feel safe or trust the administrators and often feel disengaged from the educational system.
