National Post – ‘A Very Critical Clash of Cultures’: Plea Deal Over Honour Killing Threats Saves Syrian Couple from Deportation
A Syrian refugee couple who threatened their adult daughter with an honour killing for dating a Canadian man have made a plea deal with New Brunswick prosecutors that will save them from possible deportation back to their war-ravaged homeland. Ahmad Ayoub, 52, and his wife Faten, 48, were freed this week after 72 days in jail, after pleading guilty to uttering threats as a summary conviction offence, and being sentenced to time served.
Toronto Star – Residency Delays Could Be Bad News for Country Dependent on Immigration
A study published this week paints a hypothetical picture of Canada’s future so unlikely that its authors call it “counterfactual”: a Canada without immigration. According to researchers Kareem El-Assal and Daniel Fields, if Canada stopped letting in immigrants, the country’s annual GDP growth would slow to 1.3 per cent between now and 2040. The population would age more quickly. The labour force supporting that aging population would shrink.
Global News – 3 Ontario Residents Charged with Allegedly Exploiting, Trafficking Migrant Workers
The CBSA alleges three people recruited migrant workers from the Philippines and other countries to work as mushroom pickers in Ontario. They say the charges come after a year-long investigation into the alleged scheme. The owner and operator of the Sharon Mushroom Farm in Sharon, Ont., Laxman Marsonia; the owner and operator of A&L Hammer Workforce Management in Toronto, Liwayway (Lily) Mirand; and Yatin Bera of Richmond Hill, Ont., were all charged.
CBC News – CAQ Immigration Plan Sets 3-Year Deadline on Learning French, Passing Values Test
The Coalition Avenir Québec wants to give newcomers three years to show they can speak French and conform to Quebec values or they will be flagged to federal immigration authorities. Under the plan, laid out in an “orientation document” made public this week, immigration candidates would receive a temporary three-year permit, referred to as a certificat d’accompagnement transitoire (CAT), and be tested on certain criteria such as knowledge of the French language in order to receive authorization to apply for Canadian residency.
Global News – If Immigration Was Slashed, Canada’s Economy Would Feel the Pinch: Report
Due to Canada’s small population and aging workforce, a new Conference Board of Canada report predicts that eliminating immigration would have a negative impact on the Canadian economy by 2040. “They are going to contribute to our labour force, but they’re also going to contribute in terms of economic activity,” explained Kareem El-Assal, senior research associate with the Conference Board. The report goes further in predicting that Canada’s population growth will be driven entirely by immigrants by the year 2040.
