Chronicle Herald – Judge Orders Jail, Fines for Convicted Saskatchewan Human Smugglers
In a ruling brought down on Monday, a provincial court judge in Estevan ordered Victor Omoruyi of Regina to spend nine months in jail and pay a $20,000 fine. His wife, Michelle Strawford-Omoruyi, was given a 12-month conditional sentence and a fine of $10,000. Both had pleaded guilty in March to counts of human smuggling and possession of the proceeds of crime. The pair was accused of helping five adults and four children who were intercepted while crossing into Canada from North Dakota in April 2017.

L’ancienne conseillère en immigration de Toronto Angela Codina, qui avait été radiée du Barreau du Haut-Canada, a été condamnée, mardi, à 7 ans de prison. La femme de 59 ans avait été reconnue coupable l’an dernier d’avoir violé la loi fédérale en matière d’immigration, après qu’elle eut escroqué 12 citoyens innocents en leur faisant croire notamment qu’elle était avocate.

CBC News – Young Newcomer’s Speech About Refugee Experience Wins Top Prize at Student Competition
Ruhamma Zaheeb, 13, took one of the top prizes in a provincial public speaking competition called Speak Out held in Fredericton. She and her family lived in Sri Lanka as refugees for several years after fleeing Pakistan for safety reasons. They resettled in Saint John last summer, via the United Nations. Zaheeb, now a Grade 8 student at Beaconsfield School in west Saint John, gave a personal account of “what refugees go through, the problems they face, and what we do to make their lives miserable.”
CBC News – Edmonton Couple Capture Syrian Refugee Crisis nn Harrowing New Play
Aksam Alyousef and Amena Shehab have three children. They call Hagar — a new play exploring a mother’s anguish during the Syrian refugee crisis — their fourth child. Alyousef wrote and produced the play, which stars Shehab as a Syrian woman who tries to escape Aleppo and take her one-year-old son to Europe. Alyousef said he wrote the play with a Canadian audience in mind. He has called it a “thank-you letter to Canadians” but also a portrait of refugees’ reality.
