CTV News – Canada Has Removed Only a Fraction of Thousands of Illegal Border Crossers
Between Jan. 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018 only 135 individuals who made an asylum claim following an irregular entry were removed from the country, says information provided to the Commons committee on immigration. During that same period, more than 5,000 asylum seekers arrived through unofficial entry points. The government says border officials can only remove failed refugee claimants after they have exhausted all legal options available to try for refugee status, including applications to the Immigration and Refugee Board, appeals and other administrative measures.

William Ma, a businessman who was among the local organizers for the conference, said most of the denied visas involved people from mainland China, including a team of more than 20 government officials.

In Vancouver, newcomers participating in a government-funded program have been placed in not-for-profits as volunteers but also in for-profit companies like Subway for unpaid work positions, StarMetro reported this week. The aim is to get Canadian experience on their resumé and potentially a domestic job reference. Whether or not the arrangements are legal, immigration lawyers say it’s common for newcomers and visitors to Canada to seek unpaid work opportunities as a way to gain a foothold in the job market — but they may be putting their status in Canada at risk by doing so.
