Toronto Star – Immigrant Business Owners Seek Financing Less Than Canadian Born Ones: Study
Immigrants hoping to launch businesses in Canada are believed to have a much harder time accessing capital than their Canadian-born counterparts, but although they seek financing at lower rates than Canadian-born owners, they are approved at roughly the same rate. A Statistics Canada study on the matter, published Monday, draws on data collected from surveys in 2011 and 2014. Among other conclusions, it said there is “weak evidence” to suggest access to financial capital is more of an issue for immigrant owners of Canadian small and medium-sized businesses.

More than 2,000 children have been kept in detention facilities near the U.S. southern border over the last six weeks, in many cases because their parents face criminal charges for entering the country illegally. Arghavan Gerami, an Ottawa immigration lawyer, calls the situation “shocking.” “It is a policy that is never justified and this would not stand in Canada,” she told CBC’s All In A Day Monday. She said in Canada, detention is always the last resort and the court is mandated to consider the best interests of the child.

La crise en République démocratique du Congo, la guerre au Soudan du Sud et la fuite de centaines de milliers de réfugiés rohingyas vers le Bangladesh depuis la Birmanie ont propulsé les déplacements forcés à des niveaux records en 2017, selon le rapport annuel du Haut-Commissariat de l’ONU pour les réfugiés (HCR).

The Shoe Project, founded by novelist Katherine Govier, is a workshop that asks the women to tell their stories of arrival in Canada through a central metaphor – a pair of shoes. “We were taking people who astonished us with the stories they had to tell,” says author Caroline Adderson, who mentored them for 10 weeks in the writing portion of the program. The women will eventually read their essays aloud at a public event.
