Globe and Mail – Study Suggests Prenatal Sex Selection for Boys Remains a Trend Among Some Canadians of South Asian Ancestry
A new study suggests the use of prenatal sex selection is being passed to the next generation – the Canadian-born children of South Asian immigrants. The study found a higher-than-expected ratio of boys to girls born to Canadian-born women of South Asian ancestry in Ontario who had two previous daughters and at least one abortion. Lead author Susitha Wanigaratne at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto said the results challenge the assumption that women born in Canada are not inclined to hold onto the gender biases of their immigrant parents.
CBC News – Canada ‘Working Very Hard’ to Curb Number of Migrant Children Held in Detention
The Canadian government is taking steps to further reduce the number of migrant children and families held in detention centres, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says. Goodale said Canada’s handling of asylum seekers is “obviously already better than the American system,” but he acknowledged it could be improved. Global News – Refugee Advocates Deliver ‘Toy Pile of Shame’ to Canadian Immigration Minister’s Office
A group of refugee advocates took their message to Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Ahmed Hussen on Wednesday. Coinciding with World Refugee Day, the event saw participants congregate outside Hussen’s constituency office in Toronto. They called for an end to the Safe Third Country agreement with the United States, which is based on the assumption that immigration systems in both nations are fair, which is now a major point of contention for critics.
