National Post – Canada Adds Seven People to Myanmar Sanctions List Over Rohingya Crisis

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says seven Myanmar military leaders have been added to Canada’s sanctions list for their role in the Rohingya crisis. Freeland says the sanctions are a result of the significant role played by senior military officials in the brutal violence and persecution against the Rohingya communities in Myanmar, which has forced more than 720,000 of them to flee their homes. The same individuals have also been placed under sanctions by the European Union.

The Guardian – US and Canada Are Most Inclusive to Immigrant Citizens, Global Study Finds

A survey has found that the United States and Canada are the two most tolerant and inclusive countries when it comes to who the population see as one of their own. The polling company Ipsos surveyed 20,000 people across 27 countries, looking at questions of religion, immigration status, the origin country of someone’s parents, as well as sexuality, criminal background and extreme political views. It found that Canadians had the broadest acceptance of who was a “real Canadian”, and that the US was close behind in second place.

CBC News – B.C. Cook Brought to Canada as Temporary Foreign Worker Wins $32K in Back Pay

The B.C. Employment Standards Tribunal has ordered an Indian restaurant in Surrey, B.C., to pay $32,702 to a cook brought to Canada as a temporary foreign worker. Advocates for migrant workers and independent businesses say the case points to inadequacies in Canada’s immigration system, which they say provides more advantages to high-income earners over workers from lower socio-economic backgrounds. In its decision, the tribunal said that from November 2016 to February 2017, Brijesh Mohan worked 12-hour days six days a week at the restaurant as a Tandoori cook.

CTV News – 5 B.C. Families Stranded in Japan Get Canadian Visas for Adopted Babies

After months stuck in legal limbo in Japan, five British Columbia families will be able to bring the Japan-born children they adopted back to Canada. The families found themselves ensnared in an immigration nightmare after the Canadian government refused to issue visas to their newly adopted children, amid confusion over a directive from Japan to the United States on international adoptions. The five families relentlessly lobbied Ottawa for the visas, and last Friday, the government suddenly approved the necessary paperwork.
