Global News – Western University Student to Take on Lake Ontario in Fundraising Effort for Syrian Refugees

A Western University student is diving into Lake Ontario this summer for a 52-kilometre swim in support of Syrian refugees. 21-year-old Victor Lal is training to weather the cool waves in a bid to raise $60,000 to sponsor the resettlement of two Syrian families in Canada. “Physically, I’m challenging myself; mentally, I’m challenging myself, and ultimately it’s all for a great cause.”

Toronto Star – ‘What if we rattle his f—n’ cages?’ Government Officials Overheard Discussing How to Cross-Examine Mentally Ill Detainee

The conduct of two bureaucrats working for Canada’s border police is under investigation after they were overheard strategizing about how to “rattle” a mentally ill immigration detainee. During a break in the proceedings Monday, Andrej Rustja, a hearings officer for the Canada Border Services Agency, was talking to his colleague John Oliveira as they prepared to cross-examine Ebrahim Toure, a failed refugee claimant who has spent more than five years behind bars. After the Star sent questions to the CBSA about the overheard comments, the agency said it was investigating.

Montreal Gazette – Health-care Providers Across Canada Call for End to Family Detention

In an open letter addressed to Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale and Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen, the doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers and midwives point to the long-lasting health effects of immigration detention on asylum seekers and their children. Close to 45,000 people have been detained in Canada during the last six years for immigration-related reasons — the vast majority because they were deemed a flight risk or did not have verifiable identity documents —  including 162 children in 2017 alone.

National Post – Clients of Convicted B.C. Immigration Fraudster Are ‘Far From Being Victims,’ Government Says

Former clients of a B.C. consultant convicted of one of the biggest immigration scams in Canadian history insist they had no knowledge of his fraudulent activity, but the federal government says they are “far from being victims.” The legal battle currently brewing in Federal Court could have huge implications for potentially hundreds of Chinese immigrants who had hired Xun “Sunny” Wang, an unlicensed immigration consultant, to obtain Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

Toronto Star – Canada Slammed for ‘Culture of Secrecy’ Over Immigration Detention

Canada has come under fire for a lack of transparency in its immigration detention system and its practice of detaining vulnerable groups, including children and those with mental health conditions. “The lack of independent national and international oversight bodies significantly contributes to the culture of secrecy surrounding the Canadian immigration detention system,” said a report by the Geneva-based Global Detention Project, an international research group that promotes the human rights of migrants in detention.
