Globe and Mail – Ontario, Federal Government Battle Over Resettling Migrants
Ontario has withdrawn its support for the resettlement of asylum seekers who are crossing the border illegally, with Premier Doug Ford saying that the federal government created the problem and should bear the full burden of fixing it. With the federal government paying a fraction of the cost of resettling migrants and Ontario now backing away from an earlier commitment made by the former Liberal government, cities in the province are worried about who will pay for overtaxed public services and shelters.
CBC News – Toronto Refugee Organizations Worry as Governments Fight Over Money for Asylum Seekers
Community organizations in Toronto are worried about what will happen to refugee claimants now that the new provincial government says it doesn’t want to pay to house them. Doug Ford’s office said Thursday that the federal government should pay the entire cost, adding that it believes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration has encouraged people to cross into Canada illegally. Francisco Rico-Martinez of the FCJ Refugee Centre says the province’s move could create a crisis and is hoping all levels of government will work collaboratively to support asylum seekers.

Once banned for life, they must seek legal waivers from an immigration lawyer for the rest of their lives when they wish to cross the border.

The last remaining land-border dispute between Canada and the United States has come to a boil again after U.S. patrol vessels reportedly stopped and boarded Canadian fishing boats in the disputed waters around Machias Seal Island, a windblown outcrop between New Brunswick and Maine. Rick Doucet, New Brunswick’s fisheries minister, told the National Post Wednesday that fishermen have informed him of “heavily armed” border patrol agents clambering onto lobster boats, saying they were looking for illegal immigrants.
Globe and Mail – Salvadoran Asylum Seeker Mounts Legal Challenge of Safe Third Country Agreement
A Salvadoran woman and her two daughters who fled their home country after allegedly suffering extortion and rape at the hands of members of the notorious MS-13 gang are among several parties challenging the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country agreement in court. The case has been snaking its way through Federal Court for the last year, but this week saw a flurry of new filings by three additional applicants in the case: Amnesty International, the Canadian Council for Refugees and the Canadian Council of Churches.
