CBC News – Axworthy Calls on Feds to Suspend Safe Third Country Agreement
Former Liberal foreign affairs minister Lloyd Axworthy called on the Trudeau government to suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement as people rallied and placed paper cutouts of children on the steps of the Manitoba legislature. “If the United States returns to a place where refugees can get a fair hearing, then fine, but right now, they are engaged in a total and complete reneging on all the fundamental commitments of refugee law and treaties and agreements and we should not be part of it.”
National Post – Immigrants in Canada Are Turning to Faith for Settlement, Support and Sociability
A report from the Angus Reid Institute says nearly one-half of those born outside of Canada received material support from a faith-based group, while 63 per cent relied on them to form a social network. “They don’t know anyone, so they go to their church, synagogue, temple or whatever, and that’s where they find people,” says Angus Reid, chairman of the Angus Reid Institute. The survey, Reid says, didn’t differentiate between services from religiously based organizations and those provided directly from congregations.
CTV News – Immigration to Maritimes Slows After Influx of Syrian Refugees
Between January and April of this year, 75 Syrians have settled in Nova Scotia, 40 in New Brunswick, 35 in PEI, and 15 in Newfoundland and Labrador. “We are receiving refugees from other parts of the world as well,” said Nabiha Atallah, the manager of communications and research for the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia. “In our opinion, we could increase our numbers. We did so well with the large number of Syrian refugees who came in 2015/16.”
Globe and Mail – Ahmed Hussen Criticizes Ontario Tory Government’s Language on Asylum Seekers
The federal minister of immigration objected Monday to the new Ontario Tory government’s references to people claiming refugee status as “illegal border crossers.” Last week, a spokesman for Premier Doug Ford used the term in a statement sent to the media, saying the recent influx of asylum seekers has resulted in a housing crisis in Toronto and “threats to services that Ontario families depend on.” On Monday, an e-mailed statement sent to The Canadian Press from Ford’s office repeated the “illegal border crossers” terminology.
