Toronto Star – Travellers from Europe, Middle East, Africa Now Must Provide Fingerprints When Applying to Visit Canada

Starting Tuesday, travellers from Europe, the Middle East and Africa will have to provide fingerprints and photos when they apply to visit, work or study in Canada, if they don’t want to be turned away at the border. Currently, foreign nationals are required to obtain pre-authorization to travel to Canada by air, and the biometric check on arrival is an extra step to confirm a person seeking admission is really the same pre-screened individual on the travel documents.

Globe and Mail – Syrian Refugee, Fisherman’s Friend: How a Retiring Couple Found a New Heir to Their Lake Ontario Business

Less than a year ago, Slieman al-Jasem, 21, had never cleaned a fish. And yet, he has become an unlikely saviour for Dewey Fisheries, the only fish processing operation left in the county. Run by a husband-and-wife team, Kendall and Joanne Dewey, the backyard facility was in danger of being shut down, leaving the region’s restaurants and shoppers without a source of local seafood. They are in the midst of an evolving transition to Mr. al-Jasem, who may eventually take over the Deweys’ fishing licences.

Reuters – Canada Using DNA, Ancestry Websites to Investigate Migrants

Canadian immigration officials are using DNA testing and ancestry websites to try to establish the nationality of migrants, the Canada Border Services Agency said on Friday. CBSA spokesman Jayden Robertson said the agency uses DNA testing to determine identity of “longer-term detainees” when other techniques have been exhausted. “DNA testing assists the CBSA in determining identity by providing indicators of nationality thereby enabling us to focus further lines of investigation on particular countries,” Robertson said in an email.

CBC News – Hamilton Taking 50 Asylum-Seeking Families From Toronto, Many Here Via the U.S.

Hamilton is taking 50 families of refugee claimants and asylum seekers, many from the U.S., after Toronto put out a call for help for other cities who can take them. The families will arrive in Hamilton starting Aug. 7, the city said in a media release. The cities of Toronto and Hamilton will work with a local agency to temporarily house the families — likely in hotels. The City of Toronto will foot the bill, said Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

Windsor Star – Refugees Looking for Homes Flock to Windsor to Find a Housing Crisis

After an odyssey that took her from Nigeria to Houston, to New York and Montreal, Olawore and her three children arrived in Windsor three months ago with dreams of finding a new home and living in peace.
