The Canadian government last week said it was concerned with Saudi Arabia’s renewed crackdown on dissidents, and the Middle East country has responded by cutting ties with Canada. On Sunday, Saudi Arabia withdrew its ambassador from Ottawa and dismissed the Canadian envoy in Riyadh. Now the country is planning to recall thousands of students it is sponsoring in Canada and cut flights between the countries.

CBC News – Federal Immigration Minister Discusses Role of Newcomers in Northern Ontario Economy

Canada’s minister of immigration visited Sudbury on Tuesday to speak with local employers about the role of immigration in northern Ontario’s economy. Ahmed Hussen joined a round table discussion hosted by the Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, where he heard from employers about the acute need for labour and skills in the region. “They have told us very clearly that immigration is one of the ways to tackle that need,” Hussen said.

Global News – Beechville Black Refugee Settlement Recognized as Historically Significant by N.S.

A Halifax-area community settled by black refugees who escaped enslavement in the United States two centuries ago has been named a provincial heritage property. The settlement in Beechville contains land plots settled by black refugees during the War of 1812. Tony Ince, the minister of African Nova Scotia Affairs, announced the designation under the Heritage Property Act during a ceremony Tuesday at Beechville Baptist Church. A developer has proposed a subdivision in the area, and the community had sought the heritage designation.

National Post – Feds Launch New Probe into P.E.I. Immigrants Alleged to Have Used Fake Addresses to Get Permanent Residency

A second federal probe is underway in Prince Edward Island alleging hundreds of people gained permanent residency in Canada under a provincial business immigration system that’s faced criticism for loose oversight. A search warrant from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) alleges 462 applicants to the provincial nominee program used Charlottetown homes belonging to two Chinese immigrants as “addresses of convenience.” Lead investigator Lana Hicks says in the document that she suspects the immigrants didn’t come to the Island and settle, contrary to the requirements of the provincial program.

CBC News – ‘We Are Desperate for Help’: Asylum Seekers in Micronesia Accept Trudeau’s Twitter ‘Invitation’

Asylum seekers detained on a tiny island nation in Micronesia are pleading with the Trudeau government to resettle them in Canada. The group representing 560 people, including more than 140 children, sent letters July 16 to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen. They include a petition with 185 signatures. “We heard that the Canadian government has taken a humanitarian policy on refugees and has made special arrangements when Syrian refugees needed safety,” says the letter. We are desperate for help and a safe future.”
