CBC News – Potential Refugee Sponsors Have a Month to Use New Fund
The administrators of a private fund to help sponsor 1,000 refugees to come to Canada this year are encouraging people to organize in the next month to take advantage of the money. The fund was created by the University of Ottawa Refugee Hub, Jewish Family Services Ottawa, an anonymous Canadian donor and the Shapiro Foundation, an American charity. The refugees would be identified and screened by the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) and the money will fully cover the financial commitment of sponsorship groups.
Globe and Mail – Canadians Supportive of Immigration but Concerned About Asylum Seekers: Survey
The study, conducted in March by the polling firm Ipsos, solicited the opinions of newcomers, established immigrants living in Canada and the general public through a series of focus groups, as well as surveys conducted via telephone and online. Most participants said they believe immigration has a positive effect on Canada. However, a perception exists that so-called “irregular” migrants are exploiting the system to get express entry into Canada and that security procedures are being compromised as a result, the survey found.
Toronto Star – Irregular Asylum Claims Increased in July After a Two-Month Decline
Newly published federal data shows a total of 1,634 irregular migrants were apprehended by RCMP between official border crossings last month. That’s 371 more than the number of people who crossed irregularly into Canada in June. The numbers had been slowly decreasing since May — a downward trend the federal government had attributed to its outreach efforts as it continues to try to send the message that crossing the Canada-U.S. border at nonofficial entry points is not a free ticket into Canada.
CTV News – Feds Intervene to Get 13-Year-Old B.C. Ball Player to Little League World Series
Dio Gama’s team, the Whalley Major Allstars from Surrey, B.C., had thought they would be without the young outfielder after a federal judge ordered a review of the family’s immigration case last month. There were fears Gama would be blocked from re-entering Canada if he travelled to the U.S. for the tournament without status in Canada. But the federal Immigration Department will issue Gama a temporary resident permit in order to allow him to accompany his team to the Little League World Series.
