Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume has called on the next provincial government to relax the rules for immigrants who have jobs lined up in the province, as the region is struggling with a severe workforce deficit. In a 12-page document outlining his priorities, Labeaume said the city needs at least 5,300 more immigrants to join the workforce annually over the next five years.

CBC News – Motion from N.L. Conservatives to Axe Birthright Citizenship Against Canadian Values, Says Professor
Two federal Conservative district associations in St. John’s presented a resolution to support the elimination of birthright citizenship for refugees and immigrants. The resolution was presented at the Conservative Party convention this weekend in Halifax and called for the party to encourage the government to stop granting citizenship to anyone born on Canadian soil and instead require at least one parent to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. It was narrowly accepted by a vote on Saturday afternoon.
CBC News – Case Challenging Road Test Wait-Time for Refugees Goes Before Human Rights Tribunal Today
Shyesh Al-Turki was a truck driver in his hometown of Aleppo, Syria. But because of the civil war, he fled to Canada as a refugee with his family at the end of 2016. Al-Turki is now trying to get his Ontario driver’s licence, but, because of a transportation ministry policy, he is forced to start from ground zero. Hassan Ahmad, the lawyer representing Al-Turki, is bringing Al-Turki’s case to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario today to challenge the Ontario government, claiming its policy discriminates against refugees.
National Post – Canada’s Backlogged Asylum System Is ‘Not Sustainable,’ Immigration Minister Says in Leaked Letter
“Without changes to improve efficiency and productivity of the asylum process, wait times and backlogs will only continue to grow,” Hussen writes in the Aug. 14 letter, addressed to the Canadian Bar Association. “This situation is not sustainable, nor is it fair to the people who need Canada’s protection.” The language is unusually strong for Hussen, who speaks often about Canada’s “strict and efficient immigration and border-control system.”
