CBC News – With Jobs But No Workers, Manitoba Community Recruits Through Provincial Immigration Program

At a time when Canada’s refugee and immigration policy is being hotly debated, the small community of Morden has seen its population nearly double in the last decade. Much of that can be attributed to foreign workers recruited to Manitoba under the provincial nominee program. In 2015, Morden had a population of 8,668, an increase of 11 per cent from the 2011 census. The most recent estimates put the population of the city southwest of Winnipeg at about 9,000 people.

Toronto Star – Father of Mollie Tibbetts Decries Using Daughter as ‘Pawn’ in U.S. Immigration Debate

The father of slain Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts is speaking out against using his daughter’s death in support of “views she believed were profoundly racist,” a call that comes after U.S. President Donald Trump and others seized on the suspected killer’s immigration status to argue for changes in U.S. immigration laws. In an opinion piece published online by The Des Moines Register Saturday, Rob Tibbetts wrote that while he supports debate on immigration, some politicians and pundits went too far in using his daughter’s death to promote political agendas.

CBC News – Saudi Students File for Asylum in Canada as Deadline to Return Home Passes

As the deadline for Saudi students to leave Canada passes, at least 20 students are filing asylum claims in an attempt to stay. Omar Abdulaziz, a Montreal-based activist from Saudi Arabia, said he’s working with the students. “They want to keep studying here in Canada. They don’t want to lose all their credits and the time that they’ve been here studying and working,” he said. Abdulaziz successfully filed for asylum in 2013 after he said he was threatened by the Saudi government because of his political activism.
