National Post – Seek Compromise with U.S. on Cannabis at Border, Lawyers Urge Ottawa

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency sent tremors through the country’s burgeoning cannabis sector last week with word that legalization in Canada won’t change the fact that American laws treat marijuana as a banned substance, and industry insiders as drug traffickers. Lawyers with expertise in helping people cross the Canada-U.S. border say it should fall to Ottawa — not travellers— to help pave the way. Henry Chang, an immigration lawyer, says the two countries have consulted productively on immigration issues in the past and this time should be no different.

Montreal Gazette – Legault Dogged by Immigration-Question Blunders

With indications mounting that his blunders on immigration are hurting his campaign, François Legault accused his rival Philippe Couillard of orchestrating a “campaign of fear” on Tuesday, and then failed his latest quiz on Canadian trivia. The Coalition Avenir Québec leader was asked how many of Canada’s provinces are officially bilingual. Since stumbling on questions about Canada’s immigration rules and whether his party’s proposals are feasible, journalists have taken to quizzing him on a daily basis.

National Post – Montreal Mayor Rejects Coalition Avenir Quebec’s Immigration Reduction Plan

Cutting immigration is a central tenet of the Coalition platform, which includes a proposal to reduce immigration by 20 per cent and require newcomers pass a French and values test within three years of arrival as a condition of staying in the province. Valerie Plante said she found it difficult to accept the Coalition’s proposed plan to reduce the annual number to 40,000 from 50,000 given a labour shortage in her city and elsewhere in Quebec.
