Des représentants de plusieurs organismes francophones oeuvrant de près ou de loin avec les nouveaux arrivants se sont réunis pour un sommet sur l’immigration francophone. Les discussions ont permis de faire ressortir cinq dossiers importants, notamment l’apprentissage de la langue et le manque de services aux nouveaux arrivants.

CBC News – Toronto’s Yazidi Refugee Community Welcomes Nadia Murad’s Nobel Peace Prize Win

A Yazidi and a survivor of sexual slavery by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, Nadia Murad, 25, was awarded the prize Friday for her effort to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. She was 21 years old in 2014 when ISIS militants attacked the village where she had grown up in northern Iraq. She eventually escaped captivity with the help of a Sunni Muslim family in Mosul, and became an advocate for the rights of her community around the world.

Nothing makes Shahid Ahmadzai prouder than wearing his Cricket Canada jersey and helping his teammates try to achieve their goal of qualifying for the World Cup. But the member of Canada’s national squad has a big problem: He’s not able to travel outside the country and can’t join his teammates in international tournaments. Nine years after defecting from Afghanistan’s national cricket team, Ahmadzai is still fighting to sort out his immigration status here.

Global News – Edmonton Refugee, Teacher on Shortlist for Governor General’s Literary Award

Refugee Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, 17, and his former ESL teacher Winnie Yeung are on the shortlist for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction for their novel Homes: A Refugee Story. The Edmonton teen’s family decided to leave Iraq and moved to Homs, Syria shortly before the civil war broke out. What started as a speech became a short story and then a novel, with Abu Bakr as the storyteller and Yeung as the writer. Names of chapters include “Where did the sun go?” “My first massacre” and “Enroute to Canada.”

Global News – Canadian Jobs Attracting More Interest From India Amid U.S. Immigration Tension: Report

Indian job-seekers are increasingly looking to Canada — and it’s likely due to tightening U.S. work visa requirements. That’s according to a new report from job search engine Indeed. The report found that in August 2016, six per cent of all searches originating in India for jobs outside the country were for jobs in Canada. By July 2018, that number had more than doubled to 13 per cent.
