Kim Moran, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, has been wheelchair-bound and unable to walk since late last week. The Abbotsford resident was hospitalized on Thursday in Accra, Ghana, where she has been living with her toddler since August while awaiting his Canadian immigration paperwork. Kim says she called the Global Affairs emergency line to plead for a temporary visa for her son. She was denied. According to Immigration Canada, the adoption process typically takes at most two years. The Morans began the process in 2016.
CBC News – Thunder Bay Official Seeks to Recruit Skilled Workers from Europe for Northern Ontario
Yaye Peukassa took part in Destination Canada in Paris and Brussels. The event was a joint initiative of the Canadian embassy in France, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada, and several French and Belgian public agencies. Around 600 people visited SEO’s stand to express interest in working in Ontario. He was able to speak to about 150 people, in hopes of encouraging them to choose smaller northern communities. “My question was, ‘Where do you want to locate in Ontario?’ 100 per cent of people’s answer was Toronto, Ottawa.”
CBC News – François Legault to Address Concerns About Immigration Cuts, but Poll Shows Wide Support for CAQ Plan
In a major speech to be delivered Wednesday, Legault will announce policy initiatives to speed up the recognition of skills and work experience of immigrants, especially in rural areas. The Coalition Avenir Québec government has already moved ahead with its plan to reduce immigration levels by 20 per cent, a key campaign promise. Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette opened negotiations recently with the federal government that could see the province accept roughly 12,000 fewer immigrants as early as next year.
Reuters – Syrian Refugee, Stranded Seven Months in Malaysia Airport, Lands in Canada
Hassan Al Kontar got stuck in Kuala Lumpur International Airport in March after his Malaysian tourist visa expired and he was not allowed to board a flight to another country. His plight caught the eye of Canadians who sought to privately sponsor him as a refugee. The paperwork took months. During that time, Kontar was taken into Malaysian immigration detention and threatened with deportation to Syria. On Monday night, he arrived at Vancouver International Airport and became a permanent resident on landing in Canada.
