Chronicle Herald – Micro-loans a ‘Shining Star’ Helping Nova Scotia Immigrants Chase Their Dreams
Windmill Microlending issued 12 loans in Nova Scotia this year, up from only one in 2017. The loans range as high as $10,000 and the repayment rate is more than 97 per cent since the organization was launched in 2005. Often, immigrants arrive to Canada highly educated and skilled. Globe and Mail – Ottawa on Pace to Spend More than $1-Billion Over Three Years on Unauthorized Border Crossings: Watchdog
In a report released on Thursday, the PBO estimates the government spending at $340.2-million last year, $367.8-million in the current fiscal year and a projection of $395.9-million in 2019-20. It said the average cost for each migrant who entered Canada between border crossings is $14,321 for the entire refugee claim process. That figure is predicted to rise to $16,666 in the fiscal year that begins April 1, 2019, as wait times in the system get longer.
Globe and Mail – Quebec High School History Textbooks Are ‘Fundamentally Flawed,’ Should Be Removed: Committee
The report is the result of work by three historians commissioned by the English Montreal School Board last June to review the controversial history program. The program “focuses narrowly on the experience of and events pertaining to the ethnic/linguistic/cultural group of French Quebecois,” the report says. The texts largely ignore the contributions of Irish, Italian, Greek, Portuguese, Haitian and other immigrants while offering “no indication these groups helped to transform the city of Montreal,” it continues. Black history is virtually ignored, the report says.
National Observer – Attacks Against Canadian Muslims and Other Hate Crimes Are Surging
The record high of 2,073 police-reported hate crimes in 2017 was largely the result of a surge in property hate crimes like graffiti and vandalism, Statistics Canada said Thursday, and comes as Muslims are being targeted with increased ferocity. Attacks against Muslims jumped 207 per cent last year in Ontario, and almost tripled in Quebec, where reports of hate crimes peaked in the month after Alexandre Bissonnette murdered six Muslim men at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City on Jan. 29, 2017.
Global News – 40% of Those in Toronto Shelter System Are Refugees or Asylum Seekers, New Report Says
The city of Toronto is continuing its plea for more federal money in the wake of a report that found 40 per cent of those using city shelter services are refugee or asylum claimants. That number has grown from 11 per cent in early 2016 and 25 per cent late last year, according to the city’s estimates. The 2018 data was collected as part of the Street Needs Assessment, a snapshot of the homeless population that was conducted on April 26 and released on Thursday.
