Les migrants partis du Honduras mi-octobre pour aller aux États-Unis se dispersent désormais à Tijuana, quelque 2500 d’entre eux seulement étant encore localisés sur les plus de 6000 arrivés à la frontière américaine, selon un décompte officiel annoncé dimanche à l’AFP.

Hugo Hernan Ruiz, a 42-year-old systems engineer from Colombia, has a master’s degree in his field and ran the IT department of an oil company in his home country. After failing to find a job, he decided to open his own consulting business to take advantage of his South American contacts. He applied for a provincial program that assists budding entrepreneurs with grants, marketing and training. But he was rejected because the program was for people who were on welfare or who had received Employment Insurance — and he fit neither category.

Mais il n’en demeure pas moins que l’intervention sur Twitter du premier ministre en janvier 2017 — par laquelle il affirmait que tous ceux qui « fuient la persécution, la terreur et la guerre » seraient accueillis au Canada — risque de coûter cher au premier ministre lors des élections fédérales de 2019.

A new app designed by Winnipeg university students is connecting homeowners who need a hand shovelling with newcomers who want work. OnTheStep was dreamed up and designed by a group of students at the University of Manitoba as a way to help homeowners find someone to shovel their driveway. Now they’re working with Winnipeg business Hire a Refugee, which helps newcomers find jobs. Alex Shao, a U of M business student who helped create OnTheStep, said his mom led the group to reach out to Hire a Refugee.

The accused are 58-year-old Yi Zhong and 60-year-old Ping Zhong, a brother and sister who are co-owners of the Sherwood Motel in the north of Charlottetown. They have both pleaded not guilty. The trial was supposed to start Friday morning, but Thursday’s storm has pushed back the start of the trial to Tuesday. In court documents, Canadian Border Services Agency investigators allege 566 immigrants used the Sherwood Motel as their home address between 2008 and 2015. Nearly all were granted permanent residency.
