CBC News – Punches Thrown During Anti-Immigration Protest in Edmonton

A fist fight broke out during an anti-immigration protest in downtown Edmonton Saturday afternoon, before police moved in to separate protesters and counter-demonstrators. About 20 officers formed a line to separate the pro and anti-immigration groups, comprising about 150 people in total. The protest marks the second weekend in a row where protesters spoke out against Canada’s plan to endorse the United Nations’ migration pact.

Globe and Mail – LGBTQ Chechens Struggle to Find Their Footing After Fleeing to Canada

More than a year after arriving in Canada fleeing persecution in Russia, dozens of refugees from Chechnya, most of them young gay men, are still finding their footing – homesick, but also committed to making their way in their new home. Meanwhile, a federal government that until now has refused to acknowledge that it spirited these refugees out of Russia says it would do it again. “The persecution and torture LGBTQ2 people faced in Chechnya is abhorrent,” Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland told The Globe in a statement.

Chronicle Herald – Immigration Fraud Charges Stayed Against Charlottetown Motel Operators

Immigration fraud charges were stayed Friday against two Charlottetown motel owners after it was alleged hundreds of newcomers used their hotel as an address though they didn’t intend to remain on the Island under a provincially sponsored program. The federal prosecution service confirmed that it asked a provincial court judge to stay the charges because there wasn’t sufficient evidence to proceed further against the siblings operating the Sherwood Motel.

CBC News – UPEI Sees Increase in Fraudulent International Student Applications

Jerry Wang, the director of recruitment and international admissions at UPEI, says he identified nearly 50 fraudulent applications in the 2017-2018 academic year. Two years ago, he said, the university only had ten. Wang attributes 60 per cent of the fake applications he sees to students with lower marks whose grades are altered to meet the acceptance requirements at the university. Wang attributes the rest of the fake applications to people trying to come to Canada illegally.

London Free Press – Police, Mayor Rebuff Accusations of Sarnia Hate Crimes

Sarnia residents are disputing a Maclean’s article calling the border city one of Canada’s ten worst in terms of hate crimes, placing second to Thunder Bay, Ontario. The only Southwestern Ontario city named in the article was Sarnia, which reportedly had 12 hate crimes reported in 2017. Sarnia police say they only tracked four during the year. “We’re looking into it right now,” Police Chief Norm Hansen said Thursday morning. “Everything we’ve dealt with has been related to graffiti. I don’t want to sound like we don’t take that seriously. We do,” Hansen added.

CTV News – Residents Near Canada-U.S. Border to Be Paid for Asylum Seeker Disruption: Ottawa

Quebecers living by the Canada-United States border where thousands of migrants have crossed irregularly into the country since 2017 will be eligible for payments of up to $25,000, the federal government announced Wednesday. Life along the previously sleepy Roxham Road — the main entry point for migrants entering the country on foot — has been disturbed, and residents deserve to be compensated, Border Security Minister Bill Blair said.
