CBC News – Group Claims Police Are Improperly Helping CBSA Round Up Undocumented Immigrants

The group No One Is Illegal – Toronto will be at this afternoon’s Toronto Police Services Board meeting to push their case for a don’t-ask, don’t-tell policy in police dealings with undocumented immigrants. The group says it used freedom of information legislation to compile a list of more than 3,200 times Toronto police officers called the Canadian Border Services Agency from November 2014 to June 2015.

CBC News – Province’s $1.5-billion Tourism Industry Faces Shortage of Workers

New Brunswick’s tourism industry is looking to immigrants and older people to alleviate worker shortages it suffered during the summer. Tourism operators are warning they don’t have enough people to work in an industry worth more than $1.5 billion to the province. David Campbell, the president of Jupia Consultants Inc., a firm hired to research the worker shortage, said the owners of tourism businesses are also having to work harder because they can’t find New Brunswickers willing to work in the low-income, labour-intensive industry.

Globe and Mail – Claims by Asylum Seekers Hit Lowest Level in More than a Year

Newly published federal data shows 1,019 irregular migrants were apprehended by the RCMP crossing into Canada between official border crossings last month. That was the third consecutive month of decreases in irregular migrant arrivals and the lowest monthly number since June 2017. But while the number arriving “irregularly” via non-official entry points may be on a downward trend, the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) has struggled to keep pace with the number of new cases being added to its backlog of files.

Global News – Here’s What to Know About ‘Yellow Vest’ Protests Happening Across Canada

The Canadian protests are much smaller in size compared to France, where thousands have marched in recent weeks. The French protesters’ yellow vests have come to represent a highly visible sign of unity against government policies. Over the weekend, protesters in several Canadian cities, including Winnipeg, Calgary, Toronto, Halifax, Edmonton and Saskatoon, donned yellow vests. The reasons for the protests range from opposition to the carbon tax and delays in pipeline construction to Canada’s signing of the United Nations’ migration pact.
