CBC News – B.C.’s Population Passes 5 Million, Thanks to High International Migration Numbers
The report says international migration is to thank for the spike — as it is in every province that saw a population increase. Canada’s population was approximately 37.2 million on Oct. 1, up 184,000 from July 1. This was the largest population increase in number since 1971. Statistics Canada reported strong immigration levels, an increase in refugee claimants and the arrival of a large number of non-permanent residents, many of whom are work and study permit holders.
Global News – Syrian Refugee Families in Lebanon Are Marrying Off Children to Cope Financially: UN
Syrian refugees in Lebanon are falling deeper into debt, with 2018 being the worst year yet, as more families marry off children to cope financially, according to a report by the United Nations released on Wednesday. Twenty-nine percent of Syrian girls aged between 15 and 19 are married in Lebanon, a number that has been growing, according to the report. “These findings are a reminder to all of us that the situation for children is becoming more delicate,” said Tanya Chapuisat, UNICEF Representative.
National Post – Canadian Federal Court Overturns Denial of Permanent Residence to Former Iraqi Government Official
The Federal Court has overturned a Canadian visa officer’s decision to refuse permanent residence to a former Iraqi government official under Saddam Hussein’s regime, in a case that could have larger implications for how Canada decides whether to accept refugees with ties to dictatorships. Judge Michael Manson found the visa officer ignored evidence suggesting Zaghlol Kassab had little real power within the regime, and ordered that his application for permanent residence be reassessed by a new officer.

The bulk of those crossing into Canada by foot now do so at Roxham Road in Quebec, where thousands entered last year in hopes of finding a safe haven in Canada. And in an echo of the region’s rich history, the crossing – once also vital to those looking to avoid fighting in Vietnam or escape wars in Central America – has also become a focal point for a loose coalition of activists, organisations and faith groups on both sides of the border.
Global News – Obstacles Remain for Syrian Refugees to Gain Canadian Citizenship
The 25,000 Syrian refugees who came to Canada between December 2015 and March 2016 are becoming eligible to apply for citizenship after spending 1,095 days in the country and meeting language requirements. However, refugee advocates say obstacles remain for many other applicants surviving on welfare, who remain uncertain about how they’ll pay hefty fees or pass the language certifications.
Chronicle Herald – Enough Outdoors to Go Around: Refugee Prompts Retailer to Rethink Advertising
Judith Kasiama and her family fled the Democratic Republic of Congo, known as Zaire at that time, in 1997 when it became unstable after the Rwandan genocide. She now lives in Vancouver, where she can again hike, swim and watch storms. Last March, the 29-year old — who runs a group called Black People Hike: Vancouver — called out several retailers on social media for their lack of diversity in advertising campaigns. It led to an open letter from the CEO of Mountain Equipment Co-op, titled: Do White People Dominate the Outdoors?
