CTV News – Immigration Minister Confident Asylum Claim Backlog Will Be Resolved

Just over 64,000 refugee claims are awaiting a decision from the Immigration and Refugee Board. Refugees are now waiting close to two years to have their cases heard. An independent review identified persistent and systemic problems and a history of failure to manage spikes in asylum claims and backlogs. It recommended changing the way the board operates, including bringing it under the authority of the immigration minister. This recommendation was met with wide opposition from some who would prefer the board remain independent.

CBC News – Halifax’s Refugee Health Clinic ‘Stretching at the Seams’ Due to Doctor Shortage

The Newcomer Health Clinic in Halifax is supposed to transition patients to a permanent family doctor or nurse practitioner within two years, but that largely isn’t happening. A big reason is that there simply aren’t enough doctors. Of the clinic’s roughly 1,800 patients, 46 were transitioned to a doctor or nurse practitioner in 2018, according to the Nova Scotia Health Authority. The majority self-transitioned, meaning they found a new doctor on their own.

As of Jan. 1, Ottawa is funding just 16 organizations to deliver pre-arrival services, down from a high of 27 in 2015. The program’s budget for the next five years is $113 million, or $22.6 million per year, down from $32 million in 2016-17.
