Quebec Premier François Legault says he wants more French and other European immigrants to come to Quebec, despite his government’s plans to cut over all immigration levels by 20 per cent. Legault’s comments were made while he was in Paris on Monday, after meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. “When we look at the immigration situation in Quebec, the problem I see … is that there are too many who are not qualified, and too many who do not speak French,” he said.

Facing questions about the federal government’s handling of asylum seekers and the ongoing irregular border crossings, Hussen defended his approach, while swiping at the Official Opposition’s proposed alternatives. “I haven’t seen anything from the Conservatives, they don’t have a plan. You know what their plan is? To militarize the border,” Hussen said. He went on to say that the Conservatives want border or immigration officials placed along the border where there are no official entry points.

Social workers in Nova Scotia are now required to consider a child’s immigration status when they are taken into care — and can even apply for citizenship on their behalf. The policy changes follow the high-profile case of Abdoul Abdi, a former Somali child refugee who successfully fought to remain in Canada in the face of a deportation hearing last summer.

Welcome NL launched in August as a collaboration between Municipalities NL and the provincial Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism. The two-year pilot currently has projects planned for Corner Brook, Labrador West, Happy Valley Goose Bay, Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor. In some cases, the first step is correcting locals’ misconceptions on immigration, says the project’s co-ordinator in Corner Brook.
