Lubomyr Luciuk — who once said he “had no choice but to become ‘Dr. No’” because he denied so many refugee claims — gained notoriety for his views on Canada’s asylum system, including when he said Canada had become a haven for “assorted terrorists, drug peddlers and war criminals.”

Five women and one 14-year-old girl have filed reports with York Regional Police. The victims are all Yazidis who survived an ISIS-led genocide in Iraq in 2014. They have handed over to police recordings of the phone calls and screen grabs of the texts, which reference the Islamic State and include pictures of beheadings and armed Jihadis. W5 has listened to the phone calls. York Regional Police have assembled a team to try to track where the calls are originating.
“Canada is stepping up … to address the most pressing needs of Venezuelans on the ground, including the almost three million refugees,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said during his opening remarks at the summit. Canada has earmarked the new funds to help those Venezuelans who have fled to neighbouring countries in recent months due to an increasingly acute food shortage. The $53 million is in addition to the $2.2 million Canada has pledged already for similar efforts to help people grappling with the largest refugee crisis ever recorded in the Americas.
