CBC News – Haitian Asylum Seeker ‘Living in Hell’ 6 Months After Deportation from Quebec

Amid violent protests and civil unrest, the Canadian Border Services Agency halted deportations to Haiti on Friday, offering a temporary reprieve for 421 Haitian nationals still under an enforceable removal order. Unfortunately this reprieve came too late for Oberne Pierre, a Haitian asylum seeker whose claim was denied after a year of living in Quebec. Pierre’s dream of finding a better future in Canada is over, but he says his nightmare in Haiti is all too real.

CBC News – B.C. Man Deported from Canada Over Criminal Record Wins New Chance at Residency Application

Len Van Heest was deported from Vancouver to Amsterdam on March 6, 2017, over a list of criminal convictions for uttering threats, assault and mischief. Van Heest, then 59, hadn’t lived in his birth country since he was a baby. A second application for permanent residency on humanitarian and compassionate grounds went to an immigration officer for consideration. That officer rejected Van Heest’s application. On Feb. 7, a federal court judge tasked with reviewing that rejection said he couldn’t figure out how the officer came to his decision.

National Post – Syrian Chocolatier in Nova Scotia Aims to Give Back by Helping Refugees in Canada

Peace by Chocolate of Antigonish, N.S., has committed to hiring 50 refugees by 2022, and to mentor 10 refugee-run start-ups over the next few years. The now-famous company was founded by the Hadhad family, who fled their home in war-torn Damascus in 2012. They arrived in Nova Scotia with next to nothing in 2016. The company was founded shortly after and quickly found success, bolstered by high-profile shout outs like one from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an address to the United Nations.

Toronto Star – Acid Attack Survivor Who Got Life-Changing Surgery in Toronto Wants to Make Canada Her Home

Every day for a year, from the confines of her tiny hospital room in Bangladesh, Popi Rani Das dreamed of Toronto. A doctor from this faraway city had promised its surgeons could repair the life-threatening wounds in her throat caused by a horrific acid attack. Das did come to Toronto in 2017 and, following a trio of risky surgeries at Toronto General Hospital, can once again eat and drink. Now, two years since she arrived in Toronto, scared, weak and weighing less than 80 pounds, Das, 30, wants to make Canada her permanent home.

Montreal Gazette – Quebec’s New Immigration Application System Already Popular, Ministry Says

Quebec’s immigration ministry released numbers showing the new system, known as Arrima — launched by the former Liberal government in September 2018 — is running and ready to handle applicants. And the ministry again invited candidates to take advantage of the system, including those stuck in limbo amid the 18,000 files languishing in the system (which the government wants to shred). Described as the Tinder of immigration, the online system is supposed to marry a person’s skills with an available job.
