CBC News – Canada’s Private Refugee Sponsorship Program Turns 40: Friendships Forged by Vietnam War Endure

Early in 1975, the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia. On April 30, Saigon fell to communist forces. On Dec. 2, 1975, the communist movement Pathet Lao took over Laos’ government. Tens of thousands of people fled following those communist victories. As 1979 began, the international development and relief agency, Mennonite Central Committee, negotiated a ground-breaking agreement to help Ottawa match Vietnamese families with private sponsors and bring them to Canada as permanent residents. This Sponsorship Agreement was signed on March 5, 1979.

Montreal Gazette – Injunction Halting Shredding of 18,000 Immigration Files to Be Renewed

The injunction was granted on Feb. 25 after an association of Quebec immigration lawyers claimed the government’s plan to discard the files was illegal. The association argued the government needs to respect the immigration law that is in place until Bill 9, its immigration-law reform, is passed. On Monday, the association filed a motion asking the injunction be renewed as a safeguard order until either the bill is passed into law or a judge rules on a permanent injunction.

Globe and Mail – B.C. Legal Aid Lawyers Say Province Must Boost Funding or They’ll Strike

The Association of Legal Aid Lawyers said Monday that per capita funding has shrunk by 60 per cent since 1992 and B.C. ranks 10th out of 12 provinces and territories in per capita funding. Director Richard Fowler said the provincial government must restore per capita funding to 1992 levels, adjusted for inflation. Legal aid lawyers have only had one pay raise in 28 years and their numbers have dropped to 1,000 from 1,500 in 1991, he added. The report also recommends creating legal clinics for child protection and refugee cases.

Global News – Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program Will Run Until 2021

Federal Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen announced the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program will run until 2021. The pilot project is in its third year and is helping to bring skilled, educated and experienced newcomers to fill the large job gap. “There are literally thousands of unfilled jobs without the skills and the labour to fill those jobs. What is evident is that we need immigrants to come and help us build the economy that we want here in this province,” said Fredericton MP Matt DeCourcey.
