Toronto Star – Cost of Refugee Board Chair’s Car and Chauffeur Brings Criticism

The head of Canada’s refugee board has been given a car and chauffeur at a time his office is stretched trying to tackle a surge of asylum seekers entering from the U.S., the Star has learned. Richard Wex, who was appointed chair of the beleaguered Immigration and Refugee Board in July, is the first person in charge of the tribunal to be afforded the benefit — at a cost of $78,562 a year. Critics suggest the money could be better used to hire another refugee judge.

National Post – Liberals Use Budget to Strike More Aggressive Posture on Border-Crossers

Tuesday’s federal budget commits $1.18 billion over five years to implement a new border enforcement strategy. It provides few details about that strategy, but says it will help border officials “detect and intercept individuals who cross Canadian borders irregularly and who try to exploit Canada’s immigration system.” Irregular asylum seekers whose refugee claims are denied will also be “removed on a priority basis,” according to budget documents.

The program helps newcomers start a business and settle into communities that have fewer than 75,000 residents. Over 30 communities across B.C. have enrolled, including places like Mackenzie, Prince George, Quesnel, Burns Lake, Terrace and Tumbler Ridge.
