Globe and Mail – Moncton Ballet Company Looks to Move the Needle on Immigration Onstage and Off

Mr. Badrock, 21, immigrated to Moncton from Liverpool, England, last year for a job at the Atlantic Ballet. It is Canada’s most easterly professional ballet and one that has to rely almost exclusively on immigrants to fill its ranks. It is a credit to their efforts that Mr. Badrock will dance the sole part in part in a production called Alien in three Atlantic provinces over the next month. The performances are part of a novel series of immigration summits that will fuse art and business to improve the region’s record with newcomers.

CBC News – Judge Halts Deportation Order that Would Split Family of 7-Year-Old Canadian Boy

A federal judge on Wednesday stayed the deportation order against Toronto’s Rosalba Solares, 42, and her husband Jorge Orozco, 59, until their application for permanent residence on humanitarian and compassionate grounds is decided. The couple is facing deportation to two separate countries. Their Canadian-born son Julian was slated to go with his mother to Guatemala, because he has no other family in Canada. The family’s lawyers and doctors argued the deportation would harm the boy’s mental and physical health, and the judge agreed.

Activists are asking Canada to take a tougher line on Beijing by imposing sanctions on officials in China’s Xinjiang region, where members of the country’s predominantly Muslim Uyghur ethnic group have been placed in internment camps, and expedite the minority’s asylum cases. Members of the World Uyghur Congress are in Ottawa this week meeting with parliamentarians and government officials to raise the plight of the minority group.

National Post – Child Welfare Unit for Newcomers Unexpectedly Shut Down in Manitoba

A specialized child-welfare unit that helps families new to Canada has unexpectedly closed in Manitoba and agencies that work with newcomers worry their clients won’t receive enough support. The Winnipeg Child and Family Services Newcomer Unit was created in 2009 to help families that had been in the country less than five years navigate the legal and child-welfare systems. “The newcomer unit was extremely important to our clients,” said Felicien Rubayita, who works with Welcome Place.
