Financial Post – How Housing Is Helping Immigrant Families Close the Wealth Gap
New research from Statistics Canada shows that investment in housing by immigrant families has been a major factor in helping them plug the wealth gap that exists between them and their Canadian-born compatriots. Whereas the study found wealth growth for Canadian-born families has in recent years been driven both by increases in housing and registered pension plan assets, for immigrant families, housing alone has been the primary driver of wealth growth.
CBC News – Calgary Groups Look for Solutions After Syrian Girl, 9, Dies by Suicide
Amal Alshteiwi’s family told CBC News the girl took her own life after bullying at her northeast school went unrecognized, unchecked and unreported for around six months. Friends of the family say that could be because concerns raised with the school were lost in translation, and much of the bullying was done in Arabic, so went unnoticed by English-speaking staff. “They were saying to her, ‘you’re stupid, you’re a monster, you’re ugly. Whatever you wear, you will still not look beautiful. You will always look ugly your whole life,'” said Amal’s brother, Abedalla, who is in Grade 5.
CTV News – More Relatives of Barho Family Set to Arrive in Canada
More family members are arriving in Halifax to support the mother and father of the Barho family whose seven children died in a horrific house fire two months ago. The father, who was badly injured in the fire, remains in hospital; his wife is by his side. The Hants East Assisting Refugees Team (HEART) Society, which sponsored the Syrian family’s move to Canada in 2017, says the news is significant because the family arriving — which includes Kawthar’s sister — will be here long-term.

Washington Post – In a Twist, Canada Asks U.S. for Help Cracking Down at its Southern Border
The Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — a global figure of welcome for refugees — is signaling plans to crack down. And they’re asking the United States to help. The irony is not lost on those who track immigration: The Trudeau government wants the United States to help tighten enforcement on Canada’s southern border, just as the Trump administration is pressing Mexico to tighten enforcement on the U.S. southern border.
