Toronto Star – New Immigration Rules Boost Family Reunification, Protect Abused Migrants
Immigrants who failed to declare the existence of a lost family member when they first came to Canada will now get a chance to bring them here under a new two-year pilot project. The initiative, that begins in September, was one of several announced by Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen on Friday. Advocates for migrants have long complained that the existing policy creates hardship for refugees to reunite with family members or for migrants who failed to disclose the existence of children they initially didn’t know were theirs.
Globe and Mail – Employers Taking Cash From Foreign Workers Seeking Permanent Resident Status in Canada
Multiple sources came forward about the payoffs to employers – up to $20,000 – after a Globe and Mail investigation published in April identified 45 recruiters and immigration consultants accused of exploiting more than 2,000 people, primarily by charging them thousands of dollars for jobs in Canada. The sources said the payments to employers are cash transactions, illegal and virtually impossible to trace, which come straight out of the exorbitant fees that immigration consultants collect from the foreign nationals for arranging the job offers for them.
CBC News – Federal Government Quietly Offered a Settlement to Halt Lawsuits Over Immigration Program
The federal government made a secret settlement to quash two lawsuits that claimed its contentious online application process to reunite immigrant families was flawed and unfair. To resolve the group litigation, the government awarded at least 70 coveted spots to applicants allowing them to sponsor their parents’ or grandparents’ immigration to Canada. Lawyers who were involved in the settlement of the lawsuits, which included a non-disclosure agreement, declined to provide any details to CBC. There are no public court records on the settlement.
Global News – UNB Professor’s Writings ‘Racist,’ ‘Without Merit’: Canadian Historical Association
The Canadian Historical Association, the largest historical association in Canada, has written a letter saying that Ricardo Duchesne needs to be held accountable for his work and that he can’t use academic freedom as an excuse. The association says Duchesne’s arguments about multiculturalism and immigration are “racist and without merit.” In comments published on a blog he co-founded, Duchesne has written about a “Chinese Silent Invasion” of Canada, and that immigration is a conspiracy leading to white genocide.
