CBC News – Women in Siberian Coal Town Beg Trudeau to Let Them Come to Canada as Environmental Refugees

In a video posted on YouTube over the weekend, dozens of women in Kiselyovsk, a city of 90,000 in Siberia, take turns reading emotional statements, explaining how coal dust from nearby mines and factories has blanketed their homes and made their lives unbearable. “We want to openly appeal to the honourable prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau,” a young woman says in the video, reading from a statement.

Global News – Quebec Immigration Minister Defines ‘Religious Symbol’ in Proposed Amendment to Bill 21

Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette has repeatedly refused to define what he meant by religious symbols, which is at the heart of the controversial Bill 21, despite pressure from the opposition. The wording of the amendment to Article 6 states, “any object, including a garment, a symbol, a jewel, an adornment, an accessory or a headdress” will be considered as a religious symbol, if it is worn “in connection with religious belief or belief “or “reasonably considered to refer to religious affiliation.”

Global News – Atlantic Immigrant Career Loan Fund Aims to Help Newcomers Get Canadian Credentials

When Dr. Michael Fatokun moved to Atlantic Canada from Nigeria in 2018, he wished to give his family a better life and continue practising medicine. A new program is set to make that process a little easier. The Atlantic Immigrant Career Loan Fund (AICLF) is supposed to help up to 200 newcomers like Fatokun pay for the credential recognition process. Through the fund, newcomers are able to borrow up to $15,000 over four years in professions not eligible for student loan funding.

CBC News – Foreign Students Say They ‘Have No Choice’ But to Work More Than Their Permits Allow

For Jobandeep Singh Sandhu, it was his job as a truck driver that got him in trouble. Sandhu’s story is becoming more common as the number of foreign students has spiked in Canada over the past several years to around 600,000, while the resources needed to make sure they’re properly employed and housed have not kept pace, critics say.

CBC News – Quebecers Dance Their Way Into the Hearts of Newcomers

A pair of weather-worn leather shoes taps out the steady rhythm as l’Orkestrad de Kamouraska performs a traditional Québécois reel on stage. The evening’s câller barks out instructions, and dozens of dancers attentively follow — stepping to the right, stepping to the left, spinning their partner ’round and ’round. At first glance, it may look like any other traditional music celebration. But this one in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli has an inviting twist. The locals and old-timers promenading on the dance floor are paired up with recent immigrants to Quebec.
