Globe and Mail – Asylum-Seeker Border Crossings Down Nearly 50 Per Cent in 2019 Compared with Last Year
Numbers from the Immigration Department show 5,140 irregular asylum seekers – people who enter Canada between official border crossings – entered the country between January and May of this year, 46 per cent fewer people than the 9,481 asylum seekers who crossed during the same time frame in 2018. A spokeswoman for Border Security Minister Bill Blair said the government’s outreach efforts with potential asylum-seeker communities have helped keep numbers down, but Canada stands ready to respond to any future spikes in crossings.

While progress is still to be made in Canada on LGBTQ issues, in some places “there’s the real threat of discrimination, torture and even death,” the judge said.
Toronto Star – Canada’s Refugee Claim Acceptance Rate Falls Amid Record Backlog of Asylum Seekers
Despite a record backlog of asylum seekers, Canada accepted fewer refugee claims last year — the first decline under a streamlined determination system launched in 2012. Only 7,600 cases were accepted in 2018, down from 8,086 the year before, according to an annual report released by the Canadian Council for Refugees on Wednesday. The 4.5 per cent drop in the acceptance rate comes as the country grapples with a record 73,168 asylum claimants in the backlog — up from 43,250 at the end of 2017.
