CTV News – Canada’s Population Clock Shows Demographic Changes in Real Time
Within the span of just a few minutes, an online tool from Statistics Canada offers an evocative snapshot of the country’s ever-shifting population through a series of statistically modelled demographic events. The so-called “population clock” — which went live shortly after Canada Day last year — uses StatCan data to present a real-time visualization of the country’s major demographic trends, including births, deaths, immigration and emigration.
Global News – Less Than 900 ‘Irregular’ Asylum Seekers Removed From Canada Since 2017 Surge
Since early 2017, more than 45,000 migrants have arrived in Canada irregularly by entering the country mainly through a forest path between New York State and Quebec, avoiding official border checkpoints where they would be turned away and told to file refugee claims in the United States. So far, only 866 have been removed from Canada after their refugee claims were rejected, according to figures tabled recently in the House of Commons.
CBC News – Skilled Workers with Job Offers Will Jump the Queue Under Quebec Immigration Reform
Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette outlined how the government will process applications for skilled workers Thursday, explaining that people already in Quebec and those willing to live and work outside major cities will be given priority to settle here. Jolin-Barrette made no mention of the values test that the Coalition Avenir Québec had proposed as part of its electoral platform.
Globe and Mail – The Foreign Students Who Say They Were Lured to Canada by a Lie
International students say Canadian private colleges use agents working on commission, both here and overseas, who persuade student recruits that paying tens of thousands of dollars in tuition is the easiest way to get into Canada and work toward becoming a permanent resident. In some cases, recruits say they signed up for courses they weren’t interested in or didn’t plan to attend because all they really wanted was a student work permit so they could get a job as soon as they arrived.
Financial Post – Canadian Businesses’ Message Ahead of the Election: We Need Immigrant Workers
Canadian businesses broadly support Trudeau’s promise to boost the number of immigrants and refugees allowed into the country every year to about one per cent of the population. With unemployment at 5.4 per cent, the lowest level since comparable data were first published in 1976, Canada needs workers. A June 25 report showed the country’s farm labour shortage is costing billions and is expected to balloon in the next decade.
