London Free Press – Priest Goes to Prison for Two Years for Defrauding Refugee Sponsors

Rev. Amer Saka, who came to Canada from Iraq, pleaded guilty earlier this year for one count of fraud over $5,000 for using trust money that was earmarked to bring Iraqi refugees to Canada to feed a gambling addiction. So deep was Saka’s gambling urge that at the time he was under investigation for fraud, he was already on the radar of the OPP for his frequent visits to the Point Edward casino where he would gamble large sums of cash.

Toronto Star – Liberal Incumbent Ahmed Hussen Reelected in York South-Weston

Liberal Ahmed Hussen won in York South-Weston, holding the riding for the Liberals and defeating NDP candidate Yafet Tewelde. The riding was considered a Liberal stronghold, though in the week leading up to the election, polls indicated the NDP was gaining on the Minister of Immigration. Also in the running was Conservative candidate Jasveen Rattan, the Green Party’s Nicki Ward and PPC’s Gerard Racine.

Global News – Trump Administration Moves Toward Requiring DNA Samples from Asylum Seekers

The Trump administration is planning to collect DNA samples from asylum-seekers and other migrants detained by immigration officials and will add the information to a massive FBI database used by law enforcement hunting for criminals, a Justice Department official said. The Justice Department on Monday issued amended regulations that would mandate DNA collection for almost all migrants who cross between official entry points and are held even temporarily.

National Post – Liberals Hold Sway with Heavily Immigrant Community of Brampton East

Liberal newcomer Maninder Sidhu cruised to victory on Monday in the heavily immigrant riding of Brampton East once held provincially by New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh. The entrepreneur and father handily beat out his NDP and Conservative rivals to take the seat northwest of Toronto. While economic and environmental issues were a top priority for many voters, immigration and racism were also on their minds. On that score, the Liberals under Justin Trudeau clearly held the edge.
