Sahndra is in a period of transition. Three months ago, the 35-year-old immigrated to Canada from Cameroon in the hope of finding better opportunities for her four-year-old son. Sahndra is set to receive a little help over the holidays from the Gazette Christmas Fund. Each year, thousands of families in Montreal receive a $125 cheque to help get through the season. She said the money will allow her to buy some much-needed winter clothes for her son.
Global News – Soapy Success for Syrian Refugee Continuing Family Business in Canada
A Syrian refugee from Calgary, who has been using his background in soap-making to build a fresh start in Canada, has expanded to Edmonton. Abdulfatah Sabouni is a fourth generation soap maker. Sabouni was invited to come to Canada as a refugee in 2016. He wanted to continue the family’s 125-year soap legacy in Canada — his last name actually means ‘soap maker.’

Wilman Antonio “Junior” Guerrero created a music video highlighting his skills as a construction worker in hopes of attracting the attention of a Canadian company who might hire him under the Federal Skill Trades Program. “I have been dreaming of immigrating to Canada for years; it’s been a long, very difficult, road,” Guerrero told CTVNews.ca by phone from his hometown of Valledupar, Colombia, Sunday.

Dans l’appel de la contestation de la Loi sur la laïcité de l’État, la juge en chef de la Cour d’appel du Québec, Nicole Duval Hesler, fait l’objet d’une plainte au Conseil canadien de la magistrature. La plainte a été formulée jeudi et rendue publique dimanche par l’historien et professeur au collège Dawson Frédéric Bastien. Il estime que la juge en chef a manqué à son devoir de réserve et qu’elle devrait se récuser. En cas de refus de sa part, il demande à ce que la ministre de la Justice et procureure générale du Québec, Sonia Lebel, lui suggère de le faire.
La Presse – Immigration : des étudiants étrangers « piégés » avec une fausse université
Des centaines d’étudiants étrangers ont été « piégés » aux États-Unis par l’agence fédérale de contrôle de l’immigration (ICE), qui a mis sur pied et fait fonctionner pendant plus d’un an une fausse université pour détecter des fraudes dans le système d’attribution de visas. L’organisation avait pris les grands moyens pour donner un vernis d’authenticité à l’établissement, qui montrait sur son site internet des photos trompeuses d’étudiants lisant des livres sur un campus ou dans une vaste bibliothèque.

Abdulfatah Sabouni is opening his third Aleppo Savon store at West Edmonton Mall on Saturday. “It’s a big opportunity you know. It’s a big choice, I’m proud to be here,” said Sabouni. “It’s a big feeling.” Sabouni came to Canada in 2016 after fleeing from war in Syria, bringing with him his four children. He took classes to learn English and then a year later he set out to carry on with his family business that he was forced to desert back home.
